Why business owners should be blogging

For many business owners, the idea of inbound marketing through content creation seems a little out of the ordinary from traditional (buy, bug, beg) marketing techniques but the beauty lies in the lack of “in your face” marketing.  It’s subtle but works extremely well.

Blogging is one form of content marketing that can bring you many leads to turn prospects and eventually customers. It may not be as immediate as traditional marketing but it pays huge dividends over time.

Here’s 10 great reasons why every business owner should be blogging for their business:

  1. You are the expert in your business. Your blog is an extension of that expertise and is part of the marketing message you wish to relay to your target audience.  It’s your voice people want to hear.
  2. Your blog is a representation of your business.  The message that goes into each blog post article is a reflection on your values and expertise.
  3. Your blog is a perfect way to funnel people in your direction.  Whether they happen upon you by landing on your website blog from a search on Google or a post on social media, someone was seeking information you have expertise on.  Your website needs to do its “best effort” to lead that person towards either working with you, buying from you, or at the very least subscribing to your email for further communication.
  4. Blogging builds relationships.  You become a trusted advisor on your area of expertise and the world is your oyster. When you consistently provide content that speaks to your ideal audience, the next logical step for you is to nurture that relationship and convert the person through the channels you create with the goal of working with you or buying from you. Plus if they like what you write, they will share your expertise by sharing your links with other people through social media or email and even texting!
  5. It’s nearly free! Other then hosting fees you probably already for your website, blogging provides a library of education content that people find interesting, at the mere cost of time.
  6. A blog article allows you to branch out with additional promotion, sharing your blog link on social media and in your next email newsletter, to let people know it exists. Yes, you still need to tell people you put together a blog article.  Your site can’t do that on it’s own. But once you begin doing it consistently, people take notice.
  7. Consistently done, blogging keeps you at the top of mind with your audience, especially when you utilize it to take it a step further using social media and email to “spread” the word.
  8. Blogging consistently 2-3x a week can also bring your site ratings up, especially if the content is educational and informative. Your more likely to get clicks to your links, the more great content on topics you have expertise in. It is about placing yourself in the running and raising your odds.
  9. Accumulate blogs added over time is like interest on your savings account. It compounds and raises not only your visibility but your credibility.
  10. The bigger the library, the better. This also allows you to recycle some of the older articles that don’t get seen as often as the newer stuff. So when you need that vacation time, you can find a few gems in the archive, tweak and reschedule for re-run time.

While perhaps not the only good reasons to blog, this is a pretty good list to see why you should consider starting one for your business.

Blogging doesn’t need to be just about writing articles.  There are many ways to create content on your blog and share with the world. There should also be goals and a desired end result you’d like people to take once they visit the page with your blog content.

Whether someone reads or skims your article, having a good call to action let’s them know what action you want to take next.
